The Read House & Gardens is a historic house museum located at 42 The Strand in New Castle, Delaware. This house was built between 1797 and 1804 for George Read, Jr. and was considered the largest and most sophisticated residence in the state at the time. It is a significant early example of high-style Federal period architecture.

Ownership and Operation of Read House

The Read House & Gardens is currently owned and operated by the Delaware Historical Society as a museum. The Society has undertaken a full restoration of the property, and interprets it primarily in the period of the Read ownership, although some rooms reflect the styles of subsequent owners.

Visiting Hours and Admission

The Read House & Gardens is open to the public from Wednesday to Sunday throughout the year, with the exception of some holidays. There is an admission fee for visitors.
