The Regional Museum of Atacama, situated in Copiapó, Chile, is a non-profit cultural institution. Its mission is to rescue, record, document, preserve, research, value, and disseminate the cultural heritage it safeguards. This includes collections that collectively represent a significant part of the regional cultural identity of Atacama.
In 1997, the museum underwent a significant modernization process. This included the remodeling of its spaces, new museographic development with interactive elements, a conservation laboratory, a registration and documentation workshop, collection storage facilities, a museographic design workshop, a multipurpose room, modern equipment, new publications, and numerous cultural extension and dissemination activities. This modernization has greatly enhanced the visitor experience at the museum.
The museum's permanent exhibition is focused on the rescue and dissemination of regional cultural heritage. It spans from the Archaic period to the 19th century, accounting for 12,000 years of human occupation. According to the standards of the International Council of Museums (ICOM), it incorporates conservation criteria that regulate the exhibition of heritage objects, implementing a system of control and monitoring of environmental conditions, and applying preventive conservation measures aimed at maintaining and protecting the exhibited heritage.
