The Reptilium Terrarien- und Wüstenzoo Landau, located in the city of Landau in der Pfalz, is the largest reptile zoo in Germany. It offers a unique opportunity to see a wide variety of reptiles, amphibians, and some invertebrates and mammals. The zoo was born out of the private collection of the current zoo director, Uwe Wünstel, who has been passionate about reptiles from an early age.
The zoo is divided into four distinct areas. The Terrarium Hall with Night House houses animals in more than 30 different terrariums, including the world's largest venomous snake, the King Cobra, and Mississippi alligators. The Baby Station is the smallest area of the Reptilium, where eggs are incubated and young animals are raised. The Desert Hall is a large hall where presentations are held as part of the hourly program. The outdoor area mainly houses native reptiles and amphibians, as well as raccoons and Greek land turtles.
The Reptilium Terrarien- und Wüstenzoo Landau is a member of the German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Science (DGHT) and the Zoological Society for Species and Population Protection (ZGAP). The zoo actively participates in species protection through its work on several scientific breeding books and the breeding of endangered species. This commitment to conservation and education makes the zoo not only a place of entertainment but also a center for learning and awareness about the importance of biodiversity.

Reptilium Landau offers visitors an up-close experience with various reptiles and amphibians. The museum houses a diverse collection of species, including snakes, lizards, turtles, and frogs. Many visitors appreciate the well-maintained terrariums and the opportunity to observe these creatures in naturalistic habitats.
The knowledgeable staff is often praised for their enthusiasm and willingness to share information about the animals. Guided tours and feeding demonstrations are highlights for many guests, providing educational value for both children and adults.
However, some visitors find the facility relatively small, which can lead to crowding during peak times. A few reviewers mention that the entrance fee is somewhat high compared to the size of the museum. Additionally, some guests note that not all species are active or visible during their visit, which can be disappointing.
The museum's focus on conservation and education is generally well-received, with many visitors leaving with a greater appreciation for reptiles and amphibians. The gift shop offers a range of souvenirs, though some find the prices a bit steep.
Overall, Reptilium Landau provides an informative and engaging experience for those interested in reptiles and amphibians, but its size and price point may not suit all visitors.
