Housed in an 1848 covered slip, the Lifeboat Gallery contains 17 historic boats, many of which earned their Coxswains RNLI bravery medals. From an 1897 pulling and sailing lifeboat, to the familiar Arun class and Blue Peter inflatable inshore lifeboats, visitors can explore how lifeboats have evolved over the past century. Interactive displays, archive film and audio clips bring to life the moment of a launch, coping with violent seas and how technology has helped to make ever better, safer boats.

The RNLI Historic Lifeboat Collection in Chatham, England, offers visitors an informative and engaging experience focused on the history of lifesaving at sea. Located within the Historic Dockyard Chatham, this collection showcases a range of historic lifeboats that have played crucial roles in maritime rescue operations over the years.

Visitors appreciate the well-preserved boats on display, which provide a tangible connection to the bravery and dedication of RNLI volunteers. The exhibits effectively illustrate the evolution of lifeboat design and technology, from early wooden vessels to more modern craft. Many reviewers note that the collection is not expansive but is well-curated, offering quality over quantity.

The museum benefits from knowledgeable volunteers who are often on hand to share stories and answer questions, adding depth to the visitor experience. Their passion for the subject matter is frequently highlighted as a positive aspect of the visit.

While the collection receives praise for its educational value, some visitors mention that it may not occupy a full day and is best experienced as part of a larger visit to the Historic Dockyard. The museum's location within the dockyard complex is seen as both an advantage, as it complements other maritime exhibits, and a slight drawback, as it requires purchasing a ticket to the entire dockyard site.

Accessibility is generally good, with most areas of the collection being wheelchair-friendly. However, some reviewers note that certain boats may have limited viewing angles for those with mobility issues.

Overall, the RNLI Historic Lifeboat Collection is regarded as a worthwhile stop for those interested in maritime history, search and rescue operations, or engineering. It offers a focused and insightful look into an important aspect of British coastal heritage, though its appeal may be more limited for those without a specific interest in the subject matter.
