The Sackmuseum, located in Nieheim, North Rhine-Westphalia, is a unique museum that collects and exhibits bags of all kinds. This includes everything from the smallest mail bag in the world to the largest, the hop sack. The museum's collection is extensive, showcasing bags used for various purposes such as transporting money, letters, packages, coal, shoes, instruments, dowry, clothes, and even garbage.
The Sackmuseum is housed in a historic building that was built in 1908 by the trader Salli Ikenberg. This building was originally used for trading various commodities such as grain, potatoes, seeds, animal feed, and fertilizer, all of which were transported in sacks. This historical context adds a layer of depth to the museum's collection, providing visitors with a glimpse into the past.
In addition to its collection of bags, the Sackmuseum also features an old sack repair workshop, two sack knocking machines, and a small sack printing press. These exhibits provide a fascinating insight into the processes involved in the creation and maintenance of sacks, adding an interactive and educational element to the museum experience.
