The Thuringian Slate Park Lehesten, located in the mountain and slate town of Lehesten in the Thuringian district of Saalfeld-Rudolstadt, is a historical slate open-cast mine. Today, it stands as a technical monument, showcasing its unique functional buildings that have been preserved over the years.
The Thuringian Slate Park Lehesten offers more than just a glimpse into the past. Visitors can stay in the park's hotel or holiday apartments. Tours are available through the preserved industrial buildings, where visitors can witness demonstrations of historical slate mining, splitting and cutting of the material, and the production of slate boards.
The Thuringian Slate Park Lehesten also features a lake over 40 meters deep, formed in the former open-cast mine. In the historic former Shaft II building, a nature park exhibition has been set up. This exhibition showcases the diverse range of animals and plants that inhabit the adjacent nature reserve, providing visitors with an educational and engaging experience.
