The Schlickmuseum is situated in Riepe, a part of the East Frisian municipality of Ihlow. The museum has been operational since 1996, providing a historical perspective of the region for over two decades.
The Schlickmuseum is dedicated to documenting the silting of the Riepster Hammrich that took place from 1954 to 1994. During this period, over 100 million tons of harbor silt from Emden were directed into several hectare-sized flushing fields in the Riepster Hammrich.
The future of the Schlickmuseum was uncertain when the Water and Soil Association ceased its operations at the end of 2018. The museum needed a new location as the Sparkasse in Riepe closed its branch. However, interested citizens took the initiative and founded the Schlickmuseum Riepe Association. This association successfully reopened the museum near its old location in March 2019.
