In 1938, the section of the Setesdalsbanen between Kristiansand and Grovane was converted to standard gauge to be incorporated into the Sørlandsbanen. The remaining part of the line was decommissioned in 1962. However, an 8 km stretch of the railway has been preserved and is currently functioning as a heritage railway.
As of 2018, Setesdalsbanen operates as a heritage railway, running steam trains over the 8 km stretch between Grovane and Røyknes. The railway has preserved four steam locomotives from the period 1894-1902, along with a number of passenger and freight cars. The operating season for the heritage railway typically spans from June to September.
