The Sharecropping Museum, previously known as the Sienese Ethnographic Museum, is a significant cultural institution located in Buonconvento, in the province of Siena. It offers a comprehensive insight into the historical phenomenon of sharecropping, particularly as it was practiced in the Sienese territory. The museum is housed in the Tinaia del Taja, a building that was acquired by the municipality in the 1980s from the noble Taja family of Siena.

Purpose and Significance of the Sharecropping Museum

Inaugurated in September 2002, the Sharecropping Museum aims to collect and display various testimonies on sharecropping. This was a land management system in which the owner provided the land and the tenant provided his labor and family. The final product was divided equally between the two parties. This system was prevalent from the 12th century until the mid-20th century and involved a significant portion of the Tuscan agricultural population.

Layout and Exhibits of the Sharecropping Museum

The Sharecropping Museum is spread over two floors, each offering a unique perspective on the life and work of sharecroppers. On the first floor, visitors can explore sections dedicated to the landscape, the farm, threshing, the mill, and the rural village. Each of these sections provides a detailed look at the various aspects of sharecropping life. On the second floor, the focus shifts to themes related to the farm, offering a deeper understanding of the daily life and work of the sharecroppers.
