Established with a grant of 9 million dollars from the Singapore government, the Singapore Zoo opened its doors to the public on June 27, 1973. The zoo is managed by Wildlife Reserves Singapore, an organization that also oversees other popular attractions such as the Jurong Bird Park, Night Safari, River Safari, Rainforest Lumina, Rainforest Park, and Mandai Bird Park.

Animal Diversity and Visitor Count at Singapore Zoo

The Singapore Zoo is home to approximately 2400 animals from over 300 different species, with more than a third of these considered endangered. Each year, the zoo attracts close to 2 million visitors, making it one of the most visited attractions in Singapore.

Exhibit Style and Orangutan Colony at Singapore Zoo

In line with modern zookeeping trends, the Singapore Zoo showcases animals in naturalistic, "open" exhibits, using hidden barriers, moats, and glass to separate the animals from visitors. The zoo is also notable for housing the world's largest captive colony of orangutans, making it a significant conservation and research center.
