Skive Art Museum, located in Skive Municipality, was established in 1942 by architect Hans Toft-Hansen. Initially, it was a part of Skive Museum, sharing a newly constructed building with the cultural history museum. This marked the beginning of a collaboration between Skive Art Association and Skive Museum, with one of the museum's two large halls dedicated to art exhibitions.
The core collection of Skive Art Museum is primarily composed of expressionist and neorealist Danish art. It features works by renowned painters such as Jens Søndergaard, Svend Wiig Hansen, Jørgen Geisted, and Niels Strøbek. These artists have significantly contributed to the Danish art scene, making their works a valuable part of the museum's collection.
In addition to its core collection, Skive Art Museum also houses retrospective collections of artists with ties to the Skive region. These include Christen Dalsgaard, Hans Smidth, and Emilie Demant Hatt. Their works provide a unique insight into the artistic heritage of the Skive region, making them an integral part of the museum's collection.
