The Smithsonian Gardens, a part of the Smithsonian Institution, is in charge of the landscapes, interiorscapes, and horticulture-related collections and exhibits. These serve as an outdoor extension of the Smithsonian's museums and learning spaces in Washington, D.C. Established in 1972, the gardens have become a significant part of the Smithsonian's educational and research efforts.
The Extent of the Smithsonian Gardens
The Smithsonian Gardens currently oversees 180 acres of gardens on the National Mall, 64,000 square feet of greenhouse production space, and the Archives of American Gardens. The Archives is a research collection of over 60,000 photographs and archival records that cover American landscape history from the 1870s to the present.

The Smithsonian Gardens manage a variety of gardens and landscapes, the majority of which are located near the Smithsonian's museums on the National Mall. These gardens provide a beautiful and educational outdoor extension to the museum experience.
The Smithsonian Orchid Collection
The Smithsonian Orchid Collection began with just five plants in 1974 and has since grown into a significant conservation project. Additional orchids have been donated to the Smithsonian for safekeeping and propagation, and the collection now comprises over 8,000 plants representing 256 genera.
