The concept of a sports museum was conceived in 1945. Following the provision of a start-up loan by the Basel-Stadt government, the Swiss Gymnastics and Sports Museum (TSM) was established. This marked the beginning of a dedicated effort to preserve and showcase Switzerland's sports heritage.

The museum's collection, comprising 150,000 units, was regarded as a unique sports cultural asset in Europe. This extensive collection provided a comprehensive overview of the evolution and impact of sports in Switzerland and beyond.
Renovation and Expansion of the Museum
In 2014, the museum underwent a renovation that created additional space for changing special exhibitions and a permanent exhibition showcasing highlights from the collection. The renovation also included the addition of a bistro and a museum shop, enhancing the overall visitor experience.
