The St. Johnsbury Athenaeum in Vermont is a charming combination of a public library and art gallery. Visitors often praise its beautiful Victorian architecture and the peaceful, scholarly atmosphere. The art collection, though small, is notable for its quality, featuring works by American and European artists of the 19th century. The centerpiece is Albert Bierstadt's large landscape painting "Domes of Yosemite," which draws particular admiration.

Many reviewers appreciate the friendly and knowledgeable staff who are happy to provide information about the building's history and the artworks. The library section, with its ornate woodwork and cozy reading areas, is frequently described as a step back in time.

Some visitors note that the museum is relatively small and can be explored thoroughly in about an hour. While this compact size is perfect for some, others might find it limiting. A few reviews mention that the lighting could be improved in some areas to better showcase the artworks.

The Athenaeum's dual nature as both a functioning library and an art gallery is generally seen as a unique and positive aspect. However, this can sometimes lead to a slightly confusing layout for first-time visitors.

Overall, the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum is well-regarded for its historical significance, impressive art collection, and the opportunity it provides to experience a slice of 19th-century cultural life in a small Vermont town.

In June,2024,I visited this small cosy art museum located in a beautiful Victorian-style library in Saint Johnsbury,Vermont. I appreciated fine American Paintings by Albert Bierstadt("Domes of the Yosemite"),Jasper Cropsey(Hudson River School,"Autumn Woods"),Sanford Gifford,William Hart(Hudson River School,"Autumn Day"),and George Hall, among others.I saw fine European Paintings by William Adolphe Bougereau("Raspberry Girl".fine 19th Century Naturalism),Julius Hubner("Wayside Devotion")Karl Kuwasseg("View of Yeres,France"),Louis Emil de Grandchamp("Donkey Driver of Cairo",quintessential Oriental Painting),Luigi Bazzani("Pompeian Interior),and Eugene Verboeckhoeven("Sheep"),among others. This art museum caters to people with Conservative tastes when it comes to Art.I have been to many more comprehensive art museums, nevertheless I stll enjoyed being in the Saint Johnsbury Atheneaum.
