The Stadtmuseum Schwabach, situated in the O'Brien Park since 1994, is a museum committed to preserving the cultural heritage of the city of Schwabach and its immediate surroundings. The museum is housed in a building that was originally constructed in 1935 as the headquarters of the then Wehrmacht barracks. The building is almost entirely original and serves as a 'walk-in exhibit' as part of the city history department.
The museum showcases four main departments with internationally significant collections and objects. Schwabach is world-renowned for its production of gold leaf, screws, springs, wire, needles, and nails. These metalworking industries are elaborately presented in a specially constructed museum hall. The focus of this exhibition is the goldbeater's craft, which has been based in Schwabach since the 16th century. In the 'Goldbox' (demonstration workshop), goldbeater experts explain how wafer-thin gold leaf is made using historical tools and machines from the first half of the 20th century.
The Stadtmuseum Schwabach houses the world's largest special collection of toys and model railways from the Gebrüder Fleischmann company. The collection is presented against the backdrop of the turbulent times from 1887 to the present. In cooperation with the Franconian traditional company, around 2,500 exhibits of rare historical tin toys and model railways, as well as six model railway layouts, are presented against the backdrop of the 125-year company history and world history with many interactive elements.
