Sumida Aquarium
Source

The Sumida Aquarium is a public aquarium situated on the 5th and 6th floors of the Tokyo Skytree in Sumida, Tokyo. The aquarium, which opened in 2012, coincided with the opening of the Tokyo Skytree itself. This location offers visitors the unique experience of exploring marine life while being in one of Tokyo's most iconic landmarks.

The Ogasawara Sea Tank at Sumida Aquarium

One of the highlights of the Sumida Aquarium is the "Ogasawara Sea Tank". This 6-metre deep tank is designed to represent the ocean around the Ogasawara Islands, a World Natural Heritage site. The tank houses more than 50 different species of fish, including sand tiger sharks, all of which were transported from the islands.

Penguin Pool at Sumida Aquarium

The Sumida Aquarium is also home to one of the largest indoor penguin pools in Japan. The pool, located in the atrium, is 24 metres wide and 14 metres deep. It houses around 50 Magellanic penguins, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to observe these fascinating creatures up close.

Sumida Aquarium Reviews

Sumida Aquarium has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Sumida Aquarium, located in Tokyo, Japan, offers visitors a modest yet enjoyable aquatic experience. The aquarium's main draw is its large tank featuring various marine life, including colorful tropical fish and graceful jellyfish. Many visitors appreciate the well-maintained exhibits and the opportunity to see penguins, which are particularly popular among children.

The aquarium's location within the Tokyo Skytree complex is convenient, making it easy to combine with other attractions. However, some visitors find the aquarium relatively small compared to others they've visited, which can lead to crowding during peak times.

While the exhibits are generally well-presented, some guests note that the variety of marine life is somewhat limited. The jellyfish area receives particular praise for its ethereal beauty and calming atmosphere.

Ticket prices are considered reasonable by most, though a few visitors feel the experience doesn't quite justify the cost. The gift shop offers a selection of unique souvenirs, which is a plus for many.

Overall, Sumida Aquarium provides a pleasant, if not extraordinary, experience. It's suitable for families with children and those looking for a brief aquatic interlude while exploring Tokyo, but may not satisfy hardcore marine life enthusiasts seeking a more extensive collection.
