Tanks Arts Centre
Source

The Tanks Arts Centre, located at Collins Avenue Edge Hill in Cairns, Queensland, Australia, is a heritage-listed former fuel depot from World War II. Built in 1943, it was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 2 February 2007. The building now serves as a multi-use contemporary arts facility for the visual and performing arts.

Original Purpose of the Tanks Arts Centre

The Tanks Arts Centre was originally built as the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Fuel Installation at Edge Hill in 1943. This was in response to the increased military presence during World War II. The installation included five large fuel storage tanks, earth and concrete bunds around the tanks, auxiliary buildings, and an underground pipeline from the tanks to Cairns wharves.

Integration with Flecker Botanical Gardens

Most of the structures of the former fuel installation have been incorporated into the Flecker Botanical Gardens, a recreational area located at the southern foothills of the Mount Whitfield range. Tanks 3-5 have been adaptively re-used and now form part of the Tanks Arts Centre, serving as a space for performances and exhibitions.

The Tanks Arts Centre in Cairns, Australia, is a well-regarded cultural venue that offers a diverse range of artistic experiences. Located in former World War II fuel storage tanks, this unique space has been repurposed into an arts center that hosts exhibitions, performances, and community events.

Visitors often praise the center for its distinctive architecture and atmosphere, appreciating how the industrial history of the site has been preserved and integrated into its current function. The venue is known for its excellent acoustics, making it a popular spot for live music performances and concerts.

Many reviewers highlight the center's commitment to showcasing both local and international artists, providing a platform for a wide variety of artistic expressions. The exhibitions are frequently described as thought-provoking and well-curated, offering insights into contemporary art and cultural themes.

The Tanks Arts Centre is also commended for its role in the community, hosting workshops, markets, and cultural events that engage local residents and tourists alike. The surrounding botanic gardens add to the appeal, creating a pleasant environment for visitors to explore before or after attending an event.

However, some visitors mention that the center's programming can be inconsistent, with the quality and appeal of events varying. A few reviewers note that the venue can get warm during crowded events, particularly in the tropical climate of Cairns.
