Source

Taronga Western Plains Zoo, often referred to as Dubbo Zoo, is a large-scale zoo located near Dubbo, in New South Wales, Australia. The zoo first opened its doors to the public on the 28th of February, 1977. It was established with the aim of providing more living and breeding space for large animals such as elephants and antelopes, which required more space than was available at the Sydney site.

Location and Management of the Zoo

The Taronga Western Plains Zoo is managed by the Taronga Conservation Society, in conjunction with Taronga Zoo Sydney. The zoo is conveniently located on the Newell Highway in west Dubbo, approximately 5 km from the city center. This makes it easily accessible for visitors.

Open-Range Design of the Zoo

The Taronga Western Plains Zoo is designed as an open-range zoo. Instead of walls and fences, concealed moats are used to separate the animals from the visitors. This unique design gives visitors the impression of being with the animals in their natural habitat, enhancing the overall experience.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo, Australia, offers a memorable wildlife experience. The zoo's open-range concept allows visitors to observe animals in spacious, natural-like habitats. Many visitors appreciate the 6km circuit, which can be explored by car, bike, or on foot, providing flexibility for different preferences and abilities. The variety of animals, including endangered species like rhinos and big cats, is often highlighted as a major draw.

The zoo's conservation efforts and educational programs receive positive feedback, with many guests finding the keeper talks and animal encounters informative and engaging. The site's layout and well-maintained grounds contribute to a pleasant atmosphere.

Some visitors note that the zoo can be quite spread out, which might be challenging for those with mobility issues or young children, especially on hot days. A few reviews mention that some exhibits may be temporarily closed or animals may not always be visible, which can lead to minor disappointments.

The on-site accommodation options, such as the Zoofari Lodge, are generally well-received, offering a unique overnight experience. However, some find these options and general admission prices to be on the higher side.

Overall, Taronga Western Plains Zoo is widely regarded as a high-quality wildlife park that offers an immersive and educational experience, making it a popular attraction for families, animal enthusiasts, and tourists visiting the Dubbo area.
