Te Whare Taonga o Kāwhia - Kāwhia Museum is a museum in the small west coast town of Kāwhia in the Waikato region and has been in operation since 1990 in the historical Kāwhia County Council building that opened in 1916. Historically, Kāwhia has a rich Jurassic and natural history, and Te Whare Taonga o Kāwhia houses a collection of Jurassic and other period fossils found in and around the Kāwhia area. Kāwhia is the final resting place of the Tainui waka and is a location of historical significance to Waikato iwi (tribes) of Aotearoa New Zealand and the Kingitanga. The Museum's Māori Taonga Room displays a variety of historical tools, Māori arts, ancestors and their stories. With the arrival of colonial settlers to Kāwhia, new tools, technology and activities were introduced, and these are showcased in the Museum. This includes a traditional racing whaleboat which tells the story of the Kāwhia Whaleboat Regattas, an ongoing Kāwhia event which has been running for over 150 years. The Museum also houses the Kāwhia Information Centre providing visitors and locals with information about accommodation, local businesses, activities and events.
