The Chora Church, also known as Kariye Camii in Turkish, is a significant historical site in Istanbul. This medieval Byzantine church was originally built around 550 AD. It underwent several transformations over the centuries, becoming a mosque in the 16th century. From 1945 to 2020, it served as a museum, showcasing its rich history and stunning Byzantine mosaics. However, since 2020, it has been reconverted into a mosque.

Renovation of the Chora Church

The Chora Church suffered significant damage during the Latin occupation of Constantinople and was in a state of disrepair by the end of the 13th century. However, it was restored between 1316 and 1321 under the guidance of the Byzantine statesman Theodore Metochites. This renovation is considered the fifth construction phase of the church, marking a significant period in its history.

The Chora Church as the 'Mosaic Mosque'

In the 19th century, the Chora Church gained popularity among Western tourists and earned the nickname 'Mosaic Mosque'. This was due to the stunning mosaics adorning the domes of the church, which were still visible at the time. However, the mosaics on the lower walls were hidden behind wooden doors, adding an element of mystery to the site.
