The Centre features a small but informative display covering various aspects of Tipton’s industrial and social history. One focus is on the development of the town following the construction of the first canal in 1769. Eventually some 13 miles of waterway lay within the parish boundary. This lead to Tipton being called the ‘Venice of the Midlands’. The area is also notable for the production of the world’s first iron steamship, the Aaron Manby in 1822.
