The Tobiashammer is a significant historical site located in Ohrdruf, Thuringia, Germany. Dating back to 1482, this large, water-driven hammer mill has been preserved as an industrial monument and museum since 1983. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the rich industrial history of the region.
The Tobiashammer museum houses five working trip hammers, a rolling mill, a stamp mill, and a grinding workshop, as well as furnaces. The mill continues to be driven by four water wheels, offering visitors a glimpse into the operational aspects of this historical industrial site.
Since 1988, the Tobiashammer has been home to one of the largest steam engines in Europe. This twin, tandem, reversing steam engine was built in 1920 and weighs a total of 305 tonnes, with a power output of 12,000 horsepower. Originally from the old Maxhütte smeltery at Unterwellenborn, it was decommissioned in 1985. The engine is fully operational and is demonstrated during guided tours, providing a unique experience for visitors.
