The Tuscaloosa Museum of Art was the culmination of 40 years of dedicated art collection by Jack Warner, who was the CEO of Gulf States Paper, which later became the Westervelt Company. The museum's collection was a testament to Warner's passion for American art and his commitment to preserving and showcasing it.
The Westervelt-Warner collection, housed in the Tuscaloosa Museum of Art, boasted more than 500 works dating from 1775 onwards. The collection featured works from renowned artists such as John Singer Sargent and Childe Hassam, as well as other significant figures in American art like Albert Bierstadt, Rembrandt Peale, Edward Hicks, Thomas Moran, Edward Hopper, Robert Henri, Edward Potthast, and Charles Bird King.
The Tuscaloosa Museum of Art permanently closed its doors in 2018. Following the closure, some of the art pieces were moved to the company's headquarters, while the rest were prepared for sale. The closure marked the end of an era for the museum, which had been a significant cultural institution in Tuscaloosa for many years.
