Victoria Mansion, also known as the Morse-Libby House or Morse-Libby Mansion, is a significant example of American residential architecture. It is located in downtown Portland, Maine, United States. This mansion is a landmark that showcases the architectural prowess of the 19th century.
Victoria Mansion was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1971. It is recognized for its architectural significance as a particularly well-preserved Italianate mansion. This recognition underscores the mansion's historical importance and its preservation efforts.
Thanks to donations by the Libby family, 97 percent of the original contents of Victoria Mansion have been preserved. These include Herter furniture, elaborate wall paintings, artworks, carpets, gas lighting fixtures, stained glass, porcelain, silver, and glassware. This high level of preservation provides a detailed glimpse into the lavish lifestyle of the 19th century.
In 1941, the house was opened as the Victoria Mansion, named after Britain's Queen Victoria. It was later added to the National Historic Register. Today, it continues to operate as a museum and is open to the public every day from 10am to 3:45pm.
