The Waldmuseum Stendenitz, nestled in the town of Stendenitz in the northern part of Brandenburg, is one of the oldest forest museums in Germany. It is situated in the picturesque region of Ruppiner Schweiz, near Neuruppin on the Zermützelsee. This location offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the rich history and natural beauty of the area.
The Waldmuseum Stendenitz was inaugurated in 1936 by Hans Zander, a forester in the Rottstiel district of the Alt Ruppin Forestry Office. Zander, an attentive observer of the forest, collected a variety of interesting and curious items from nature. These collections formed the foundation of the museum's exhibits, providing visitors with a unique insight into the natural world.
In close proximity to the Waldmuseum Stendenitz, a nature trail was established in 1960/61. This trail was the result of a collaboration between Herbert Vollrath, the district's nature conservation officer, and Heinz Neumann, the district forester. The trail provides an educational journey through different habitats, highlighting the natural interrelationships that exist within them.
