The museum is known for its collection of fossils found in the Korbach fissure. Its architecture, which combines historical buildings with contemporary design, has won multiple awards, including a special prize from the German Urban Development Prize in 1999.
The museum underwent an expansion from 1994 to 1997 to accommodate the fossils that have been discovered in the Korbach fissure since 1964. This expansion allowed for a more appropriate display of these significant findings.
The museum complex consists of a group of four historic buildings and a modern extension building. The historic buildings include a Gothic stone house from the 14th century and three adjacent half-timbered buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries. The modern extension building, designed by the Kassel architect Berthold Penkhues, complements the historic structures.
