Our Railway Museum is here in the now leafy village of Wylam. We think we are the real home of steam locomotives, with local engineers Hedley, Hackworth and Forster building them a good ten years before the Stockton and Darlington Railway got off the ground in 1825 . The Museum features exhibits reaching back to the original horse-drawn wagonways serving the coal mines, the early development of steam power here and then bringing local railway history right up to the 21st century. The world's oldest preserved locomotives "Puffing Billy" and "Wylam Dilly" were built here, though now in London and Edinburgh respectively. And last but not least Wylam was the original home of George Stephenson, known as the 'father of the railways' who was born here in 1781 (though moving on within the region before starting his own renowned railway related work).
