The Zoológico Miguél Álvarez del Toro, also known as ZOOMAT, is a zoo situated in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico. The zoo was established in 1942 and was later renamed in honor of its director, Miguel Alvarez del Toro, in 1981. The zoo has a rich history and has been relocated over the years, with its current location being in a nature reserve known as El Zapotal.
One of the unique features of the Zoológico Miguél Álvarez del Toro is its focus on endemic fauna. The zoo was initially established with the purpose of studying and conserving local wildlife. This means that all the animals you see at the zoo are native to the region, providing a unique opportunity to learn about and appreciate the local biodiversity.
The Zoológico Miguél Álvarez del Toro is home to a wide variety of regional fauna. Visitors can expect to see resplendent quetzals, scarlet macaws, Baird's tapirs, white-tailed deer, jaguars, pumas, ocelots, neotropical otters, and Mexican spider monkeys. The zoo also features a reptile house, three species of crocodilian, turtles, and an insect house, offering a comprehensive view of the region's diverse wildlife.
