Boekhoute is a small village located in the East Flanders province of Belgium, near the Dutch border. The village, which is now part of the municipality of Assenede, has a rich history tied to fishing and agriculture.
Until the mid-20th century, Boekhoute was known as a significant fishing port, despite being inland. This was possible through a canal system connecting it to the Western Scheldt. Today, while its fishing industry has declined, the village maintains its rural character and preserves its cultural heritage through local traditions and historical buildings.
