Chalmette is a city in St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana, located in the Greater New Orleans metropolitan area. The city is most notably known as the site of the Battle of New Orleans, a decisive American victory over British forces in 1815, which took place at what is now the Chalmette Battlefield, part of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve.
The area's rich history is intertwined with Louisiana's French and Spanish colonial past, as well as its significance in American military history. Today, Chalmette maintains its historical importance while serving as a suburban community that reflects the cultural diversity and traditions of southern Louisiana. The city experienced significant impact from Hurricane Katrina in 2005 but has since undergone substantial recovery and rebuilding efforts, demonstrating the resilience of its community.
