Waldgirmes is a village located in the German state of Hesse, notable for its significant archaeological importance. The site gained prominence after the discovery of remains of a Roman civilian settlement from around 4 BCE, which has provided valuable insights into early Roman presence in ancient Germania.
Archaeological excavations revealed that this was intended to be a major administrative center, complete with a forum and other Roman-style public buildings. The settlement's short life of about 16 years, ending around 9-10 CE, coincided with the Roman defeat in the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest.
Today, Waldgirmes is part of the municipality of Lahnau and continues to be an important site for understanding the Roman presence east of the Rhine River.
