Exhibition 'Answering the Call: Celebrating our NHS Commonwealth Nurses' in Glenside Hospital Museum
April 10th - December 2024
Answering the Call highlights the important work done by people from the Commonwealth in the newly formed NHS. Take a journey through the Museum to discover the displays interspersed throughout the fascinating collection about psychiatric care.
The exhibition uses individual histories provided by intrepid nurses who travelled from Commonwealth countries to work in the newly formed NHS. A team of ex-nurses, students and community members joined forces to record the oral histories of these nurses and then participate in using stitch, print and sculpture to create a display of work that gives us all an insight into their contribution and psychiatric hospital care. It is a co-created project, with all participants contributing their ideas and creativity, funded by Historic England ‘s ‘Everyday Heritage Grants: Celebrating Working Class History’.
The exhibition is open on Wednesdays from 10am – 1pm and all day Saturdays 10am – 4pm. A £5.00 ticket for two, provides entry to the whole Museum.
