Exhibition 'Archaeology in Clare before the 2018-20 excavations' in Clare Ancient House Museum
Clare has long been of historical interest, but archaeological investigations have been few. An owner of the Castle allowed work in the 1840s which unearthed some finds reported in the journals. Work done in the 1950s to lay a pipeline was again reported in the journals and a few finds are in the Museum. In 2013 the HLF projects under the title Managing a Masterpiece found a complete skeleton, carbon-dated to the 11th century, and parts of other skeletons which together suggested a possible cemetery from the pre-Norman college of secular canons. In 2018 another HLF project opened trenches in the Outer Bailey of the Castle with Saxon and medieval finds.
