Exhibition 'Eroded Borders' in Elleboogkerk
From May 2025, a new installation by the collective GEGERBOYO, Eroded Borders, will be on display in the Elleboogkerk.
In this work, they explore the complex themes of territory and borders, and how these have developed over time in Indonesia. GEGERBOYO shows that borders are never fixed, but always in flux, depending on how we talk about history, power and identity. They use different forms of communication—such as official narratives, local traditions and other perspectives—to show how borders arise both literally and symbolically. By bringing these different sources together, Gegerboyo invites the viewer to reflect on the lasting influence of conflicts over territory and the ongoing creation of new borders in today's world. In the new installation, GEGERBOYO applies various traditional techniques, including batik and leather painting.
GEGERBOYO is a collaborative project between Enka Komariah, Prihatmoko Moki, Anjali Nayenggita, Vendy Methodos (2017–2023), Dian Suci (2017–2022) and Ipeh Nur (2019–2022), founded in June 2017 in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. GEGERBOYO's work is inspired by Indonesia, particularly Javanese cultural traditions, urban culture, the relationship between the two and the connections with current socio-political phenomena.
