Exhibition 'Geworteld' in MOW I Museum Westerwolde
Ancient beeches provide shade to farmsteads. Rows of poplars line straight roads. Sturdy oaks lend character to winding sandy paths. In the open landscape of Groningen, trees are true eye-catchers.
Fascinating Trees
Trees are silent witnesses to history and play a role in countless stories and myths. But what about their social lives? Do trees communicate via their root systems, fungal networks, and through their canopies?
Wold
Westerwolde has a long history as a wooded area. This is even reflected in its name: 'wold' is derived from 'forest' (woud). In this region, you will find the oldest forest in Groningen. The area around Ter Apel, in particular, has been a place for forestry and forest recreation for centuries, and artists have drawn inspiration from it for just as long.
Contemporary Work
Todayโs artists are equally passionate about trees. The exhibition features work ranging from painting, printmaking, and ceramics to textiles andโnaturallyโwood. You will find animations, photography with mythical atmospheres, and documentary stories. You can listen to the sound of dehydration and contribute to an installation of growing annual rings.
MOW Young
A young visitor? Wander through the galleries with your own route and discover everything about the characters and scars of trees. Marvel at their age, give them a face, carve your name into trunk wood, and grow a little tree of your own.
