Exhibition 'Martin Sijbesma | Painter of the Past' in Museum Martena
Martin Sijbesma is a Frisian painter with a heart full of nostalgia. Romantic realism—that’s how experts describe his body of work. Or, as he puts it himself: “I’m a painter of the past!”
Starting June 7, step into the past together with Martin Sijbesma. He takes you through dancing Frisian fields, remote gravel roads, vintage cars with picnic baskets, and nostalgic still lifes and portraits you can almost smell and taste. It’s a world that no longer exists, yet for Martin Sijbesma, it remains vividly alive.
Romantic realism—that’s the term connoisseurs use to describe Sijbesma’s oeuvre. His life’s work will be on display at Museum Martena from June 7, 2025, through January 4, 2026.
