Frankfurt am Main is a city in Germany, located on the River Main. The city was a prosperous, independent city in the Middle Ages and an important center for printing and the book trade. In the Second World War Frankfurt was heavily bombed and almost the entire medieval city center was destroyed.
Today Frankfurt is a European metropolis. Characteristic of the city is the modern cityscape that is dominated by tall skyscrapers. Frankfurt is the most important financial center in the country, and is home to the Deutsche Bundesbank, the German stock exchange and head offices of several large banks.
