Unfortunately, most historic buildings in Hamburg were destroyed during the bombing of Hamburg in the Second World War. The cityscape is dominated by five church towers and the tower of the town hall dating from 1897.

The Speicherstadt (complex of warehouses built on stilts from the end of the 19th century) and the Kontorhausviertel (brick buildings from the 20th century) with the Chilehaus by Fritz Höger from 1924 are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
