The Accademia Gallery in Florence was founded in 1784 and holds Michelangelo's masterpiece - the statue of David. Apart from this famous sculpture, it holds other artworks by Michelangelo and a collection of Renaissance paintings. The marble statue of the Biblical hero David was created between 1501 and 1504. The gallery also displays some of Michelangelo's unfinished work - four Prisoners and a statue of Saint Matthew. Other artists featured in the Galleria dell'Accademia include Paolo Uccello, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Sandro Botticelli and Andrea del Sarto. A collection of Russian icons gathered by the House of Lorraine can be also found here.

    A very nice museum with one major attraction: Michelangelo’s ‘David’. We were really surprised how big and beautiful it really was. Pictures don’t do justice, so it is definitely recommended to go visit this place when you are in or near Florence!
