Agost Pottery Museum and its collection

Source

The museum is based in the old Severino Torregrosa ceramics factory, which was in operation between 1902 and 1975. After it closed, the artist Facundo Senpau turned the building into his art gallery. In 1979, German ethnologist Ilse Schütz visited Agost and visited Senpau's workshop. Ilse fell in love with Agost's pottery and carried out important research and conservation work, which resulted in the Pottery Museum being created in 1981. The building preserves the original factory facilities, such as the Arab kilns, the clay decanting basins and the workshop area, giving visitors a unique experience as they learn about the pottery manufacturing process.

The Museo de Alfarería in Agost, Spain, offers visitors an insightful look into the region's rich pottery-making heritage. The museum showcases a variety of traditional ceramics and tools used in the craft, providing a comprehensive overview of the local pottery industry's history and techniques.

Visitors appreciate the well-organized displays and the opportunity to see potters at work, which adds an interactive element to the experience. The museum's location in a former pottery workshop adds authenticity to the exhibits. Many find the guided tours informative, though some note that not all information is available in multiple languages.

While the museum is relatively small, it compensates with its focused and in-depth presentation of Agost's pottery tradition. Some visitors mention that the museum could benefit from more modern presentation techniques or interactive displays to engage younger audiences.

The museum's gift shop offers a selection of local pottery, which many visitors enjoy. However, a few reviewers note that the pricing of items can be on the higher side.

Overall, the Museo de Alfarería provides a solid educational experience for those interested in traditional Spanish pottery and local craftsmanship. It may not appeal to everyone, but it offers valuable insights into an important aspect of the region's cultural heritage.
