Basilica of Santa Maria and its collection

The Santa Maria Basilica, situated in the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries in Girona, Catalonia, Spain, has been considered the Empordà Cathedral for centuries. Despite this, it has never been officially granted this status by papal authorities. The basilica is the second largest building in the Costa Brava, surpassed only by the Girona Cathedral, and its size is sufficient to justify cathedral status.

Architectural History of the Santa Maria Basilica

The Santa Maria Basilica is a Gothic structure that was initiated in the thirteenth century, replacing an earlier Romanesque church from the tenth century. The construction of the basilica was completed in the fifteenth century, marked by the completion of a marble facade and an alabaster altarpiece on the main altar. Some remnants of the original Romanesque church, such as the first floors of the bell tower and the grand baptismal, can still be seen today.

Historical Background of the Santa Maria Basilica

The Santa Maria Basilica was built on the same site as a Romanesque church, which was first mentioned in a document from 1007. The construction of the Gothic structure was directed by the architect Ramón de Xartres and began on 13 February 1261. Despite several efforts by the counts of Empúries, the basilica never attained cathedral status, although its architectural structure and dimensions would justify such a designation.
