The Calviac Zoological Reserve is a private, non-profit zoo located in Dordogne, Calviac-en-Périgord, near Sarlat, at a place called "Sous le Roc". It was opened on August 3, 2008, and covers four hectares of forest land. The zoo is home to 45 species of animals that are severely threatened. As a permanent member of the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the reserve is committed to ex situ conservation by participating in European programs for endangered species.
The Calviac Zoological Reserve is divided into five geographical zones, corresponding to hotspots where biodiversity is particularly threatened. The uniqueness of Calviac is that the animals have vast spaces in the forest. Some of these territories can be crossed by visitors, allowing a close approach to the animal in its natural environment.
The Calviac Zoological Reserve's annual attendance is steadily increasing, now welcoming approximately 30,000 visitors per year. The entrance fees represent about 80% of the financial resources. This indicates the popularity and importance of the zoo to the local community and tourists alike.
