The Fuentes del Narcea, Degaña e Ibias Natural Park is a protected area located in the Principality of Asturias in northern Spain. This park is home to the sources of the rivers Narcea and Ibias, offering a unique and beautiful natural landscape for visitors to explore.
Designated in 2002, the park incorporates the preexisting Muniellos biosphere reserve, which was extended in 2003. The Muniellos nature reserve forms the heart of the park, where human access is strictly controlled to preserve the natural environment. Timber extraction has been prohibited in this area since 1970, further protecting the reserve's unique ecosystem.
Within the boundaries of the park, the European Union has designated two Special Protection Areas for bird-life. The smaller area, Bosque de Muniellos, spans 5,500 hectares, while the larger area, Fuentes del Narcea y del Ibias, covers 51,000 hectares, encompassing the remaining part of the park. These areas are specifically protected to preserve the diverse bird species that inhabit the park.
