El Fuerte de Navidad, situated to the right of the port of Cartagena, is a neoclassical style fort that once protected the entrance to the port. It was designed with casemates for the installation of eight pieces of artillery on the ground floor and another eight on the upper floor. This historical structure offers a glimpse into the military architecture and defense strategies of the past.
Today, El Fuerte de Navidad is managed by Cartagena Puerto de Culturas. If you're traveling to the city by vehicle via the A-30 motorway, you should take the 'Port' exit, CT-33. From there, you'll pass the new Cartagena hospital on your left until you reach a roundabout where the Sansón crane is installed. This route provides a convenient way to reach the fort.
El Fuerte de Navidad is divided into two parts. The left side, with two floors, houses the artillery pieces and the powder magazine. The right side is dedicated to the fort's garrison, with the kitchen, bedroom, and other facilities situated at different heights, adapting to the terrain where the fort was built. This layout provides a unique insight into the living and working conditions of the fort's inhabitants.
