The church within the Convento de Santa Clara was originally adorned with a Mudejar coffered ceiling from the 14th and 15th centuries. However, in the 18th century, it was replaced with a new Baroque vault. A restoration project in 1988, which won the Europa Nostra prize, allowed visitors to see the original coffered ceilings above the plaster vaults.
On July 17, 2020, the convent was restructured and renamed as the Museum of Medieval Painting of Santa Clara. The museum encompasses several areas including the lower choir, the church, the cloister, the upper choir, the space above the church vaults, and the convent's tower. Each of these spaces offers a unique perspective on the history and art of the period.
The lower choir of the museum houses mural paintings from the late 13th century, as well as more modern ones from the 14th century. To enhance the visitor experience, an interactive audiovisual system is available to help understand the representations and iconographies of the paintings.
The church, which was renovated during the Baroque period, is home to the main altarpiece by Joaquรญn de Churriguera. Additionally, the cloister houses a valuable coffered ceiling and mural paintings that were discovered during the reorganization of the museum by Las Edades del Hombre.
