The Crypt of the Madonna della Grotta, located in the municipality of Taranto, is a hypogeal rock church with a rich history. Originally, it served as an ancient Roman chamber tomb from the imperial age. The crypt is situated on Via Terni and is connected to an ancient spring water well. This connection to the past provides a unique insight into the historical context of the area.
The Crypt of the Madonna della Grotta was once part of the Church of Santa Maria di Murivetere, which was closed to worship in 1578 by Monsignor Lelio Brancaccio. According to tradition, the crypt was the site of the first Christian worship conducted according to the Byzantine liturgy. This historical significance adds to the cultural and religious importance of the crypt.
In December 2011, the Crypt of the Madonna della Grotta was reopened to the public. The site is deeply revered, and it is considered the setting of the legend about the first Christian evangelization of Taranto. This reopening allows visitors to experience the rich history and religious significance of the crypt firsthand.
