A unique and magical Tudor wool merchant’s house, built in the Flemish style, Ellys Manor House is an architectural gem. The main feature of the house is a fabulous scheme of early 16th century wall paintings in the upper rooms. Described by architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner as, “a rare English interpretation of French verdure tapestries”. The wall paintings dated around 1500 are said to be “the most complete, extensive and important domestic decoration of this date in the country.”

Ellys Manor House has 1 rating.
Ellys Manor House in Great Ponton, England, is a small but interesting historical site that offers visitors a glimpse into Tudor-era architecture and art. The manor house, dating back to the early 16th century, is known for its well-preserved wall paintings, which are considered some of the finest examples of domestic Renaissance art in England. Visitors often appreciate the intimate atmosphere and the opportunity to explore the house at their own pace. The volunteer guides are generally knowledgeable and provide insightful information about the history and features of the house. However, some visitors note that the opening hours are limited, and the location can be a bit tricky to find. The size of the house is relatively small, which means a visit may not take very long, but this also allows for a more focused and detailed exploration of the Tudor period architecture and art. While the house itself is the main attraction, some visitors mention that the grounds and gardens could be more developed or maintained. Overall, Ellys Manor House offers a quiet, off-the-beaten-path experience for those interested in Tudor history and Renaissance art, but may not appeal to those looking for a larger, more comprehensive museum experience.
