The Borkumriff was a fire ship position from 1875 to 1988. It was originally located at 53° 51′ 0″ N, 6° 26′ 0″ O, but was later moved to position 53° 43′ 0″ N, 6° 23′ 0″ O due to changes in shipping routes. From 1970, it was located at 53° 48′ 0″ N, 6° 22′ 0″ O. The position was about 30 kilometers northwest of the island of Borkum, in one of the main shipping routes of the German Bight.
The last manned ship on the Borkumriff position was the Borkumriff IV, which was built in 1954. This 53.7 m long and 9 m wide ship has a draft of 4.4 m and a displacement of 825 tons. It was constructed at the Norderwerft Köser & Meyer in Hamburg, with the construction number 813. The ship's fire, located at a height of 20.5 m above the waterline, had a range of 21.5 nautical miles. For the first time in fire ship construction, the superstructures and lantern mast were completely made of aluminum. The Borkumriff IV was put into service in March 1956, replacing the previous fire ship, the Borkumriff III. After being decommissioned on July 15, 1988, it was acquired by the Förderverein "Borkumriff" and has since been located in the Borkum shelter port. Today, it serves as a museum ship and provides information about the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park.
