Fornells Tower, located on the coast of Menorca, is one of the many defense towers that were built during the last period of British domination between 1801 and 1802. This historical structure was constructed with the purpose of monitoring the entrance of the Fornells port and preventing the landing of enemy ships.
Until the early 90s, the Fornells Tower was privately owned and was in a fairly ruinous state. However, in 1994, the Mercadal City Council purchased the tower. Two years later, it was handed over to the Menorca Island Council for a period of 30 years. The council was tasked with the responsibility of carrying out rehabilitation works and managing the projected museum.
Today, the Fornells Tower serves as a museum that is open to the public. Visitors can explore the historical structure and learn about its past, providing a unique insight into the history of Menorca.
