The Fort de la Pompelle, also known as Fort Herbillon, is a significant part of the fortification belt in the Séré de Rivières system. This system was constructed around the city of Reims after the year 1870. The fortification belt was a strategic defense system, and the Fort de la Pompelle played a crucial role in it.

Location of Fort de la Pompelle

The Fort de la Pompelle is conveniently located about 2 kilometres north of the town of Sillery. It is situated next to the N44 road, which lies between the cities of Reims and Châlons-en-Champagne. This location makes the fort easily accessible for visitors traveling from either city.

Fort de la Pompelle as a Museum

The Fort de la Pompelle was classified as a historic monument on 23 March 1922. Today, it serves as a museum, which was inaugurated on 10 November 1972.
